Back when I had a full-sized home decor sewing workroom, I had a table that was massive – 12 feet long and 8 feet wide! This was incredibly useful for laying out fabric flat to cut, match, and hem large drapery fabric for my clients.
However, as I moved towards smaller projects and eventually closed down my sewing center, I downsized my cutting table to a 6 foot by 3 foot size, and then again to 4 feet by 3 feet to fit my smaller sewing space. Despite its smaller size, the table is still special to me because of its height, padding, and grid.
I added a grid to the table, which I purchased from Home Sewing Depot. The grid allows me to pin to the straight lines with ease because of the padding. I can also iron directly on the table, making it a versatile workspace. Be sure to check out Professional Workroom Canvas Table Grid.
The height of the table is also an important feature, as it allows me to stand easily to cut out fabric without any bending over. Additionally, I no longer have to hunch over to sew because I set my Pfaff portable sewing machine onto the table and have a tall stool to sit on with my arms kept at waist height.
I ordered the smaller grid from Home Sewing Depot and cut it down to fit my table. In addition to the grid, the table must have a pinnable surface like insulation boards like Celotex or Homasote, or acoustic ceiling tiles can be used. ceiling tiles were secured face down to the top with construction adhesive. The next layer would be a special dense padding such as thermal carpet pad insulation, followed by a layer of 3/4oz batting and ending with a canvas. Overall, I love my workroom table grid! It’s an important tool that has helped me streamline my work process.
